Grades 4 to 8: Welcome to the Food Forest

We are currently developing a program for Grades 4 to 8 where students will explore how sustainability is fostered by the diversity of a food forest. Together, they will explore, collaborate, and express their ideas about biodiversity and discover responsible management practices, such as responsible harvesting.

The theme of interconnectedness will also be addressed through the recitation of short texts. Students will explore how languages (English, French, Latin) are rich in context and interrelationships in the naming of species, contributing to a better understanding and greater appreciation of our natural environment.

Following the workshop, teachers can extend the topic through a self-directed learning activity, in which each student "adopts" a tree, shrub, or plant from the edible forest and embarks on their own journey of building a relationship with these "generous and sovereign beings."

Finally, we invite you and your class to join us for a food forest tour once winter is over. There are nine food forests in the Sudbury area (you can find a map here). Please complete this form if you are interested and we will get in touch with more information soon.
